Contract roles are gaining in popularity, these roles are sometimes referred to as freelance or gig jobs. Employers are seeking to staff their companies with a mix of both full-time and contract staff. The pandemic has only sped up this process according to a study by Harvard Business School and the Boston Consulting Group’s Henderson Institute.
What’s the Difference?
Contract workers are often paid more per hour, though they do not receive benefits that full-time workers would expect to receive from their employers including a 401k, insurance, or paid time off. Contractors are also expected to pay their own taxes on their income. Many states have rules or requirements for what passes as a contract position.
Should You Work Full-Time or as a Contractor?
It depends. There is no suitable answer for every worker. Some people enjoy the flexibility and freedom that is associated with being a contractor while others seek the security and benefits that is expected from a full-time position.
